Meet MERJE is a series of interviews with members of the MERJE team discussing their experiences of recruiting in their specialist market.
Meet Tany Yunos, a Senior Consultant focused on part-qualified Finance recruitment, based in our Manchester office.
How long have you been at MERJE?
I’ve been at MERJE for three months now. Before MERJE I was doing a small amount of qualified accountancy recruitment in Manchester, and prior to that I lived in Birmingham where I did part-qualified finance recruitment for four years.
What kind of roles do you recruit for?
Everything from transactional roles, with job titles such as Credit Controller, Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger, up to transactional Finance Manager. I also focus on part-qualified Accountants, from Accounts Assistants through to Management Accountants and Finance Business Partners. Salaries for the finance jobs I recruit for are usually from £18,000 up to £45,000.
Part-qualified Candidates that I work with are typically people yet to fully complete their ACA, ACCA, CIMA or AAT qualifications, as well as Accountants who are newly-qualified.
How has the market changed during your time recruiting within it?
When I first started in part-qualified recruitment it was a tough, Candidate-short market, as often their study is provided by their company. and it has become even more so. Previously you could supply a shortlist of five Candidates to a Client at any given time, now you are looking at three or four Candidates because eligible job seekers get snapped up so quickly.
Also Clients are paying far more for good Candidates than they did four or five years ago. A part-qualified Accountant with a couple of years’ experience would have got around £22k-£25k, whereas now those Candidates are looking at jobs around £30k.
What advice do you have for job seekers in the Finance markets?
At the part-qualified level, it’s more about drive and ambition. The main advice I would give is to be true to yourself, and if you are after progression, don’t be afraid to pursue that progression and study support when searching for a role.
Why MERJE?
Prior to MERJE, I worked predominately in large corporate organisations and that is where I thought I wanted my career to go. MERJE was set up by people who have worked at big corporate companies, but they have made it much more of a people business – which is one of the biggest attractions to me.
When I met with Jonathan and Richard Abelson at my interview it was clear that they were from a corporate background, but their way of operating is very different, and you can see that personal approach in each and every Consultant. It’s not a recruitment machine that churns out CVs, we work every job with a view to being consultative and filling that job with the best possible Candidate.
There are loads of other benefits working at MERJE – the people are great and it’s a lovely organisation to work for.
